Coffs Harbour Venturers - Our Latest Queen Scout recieves her award from the Governor



On the 23rd August Sarah Hazell Pickering made the trip to Government House in Sydney to receive her Queen's Scout Award.

The Queen's Scout is the highest and most prestigious award in the Scouting Movement created to challenge youth members in all aspects of their life. Overall it requires more than 300 hours of service and commitment, goal setting, planning and adventurous activities.

The Queen Scout award requires completion of 13 different activities at an intoductory level and 4 tasks at an advanced level. They include challenges in 4 main areas being Leadership, Outdoor activities, Personal growth and Community Service

After three years, Sarah completed all the reports and activities in April this year.

She had the amazing opportunity to receive her certificate, signed by the Queen, from the Governor of New South Wales Her Excellency Professor Marie Bashir. In front of the fabulous architecture of Government House overlooking the Opera House in Sydney. She received her award along with thirty four other outstanding Venturer Scouts.

Some of the challenges Sarah completed as part of her journey include:

Expedition – Organised and led an epic 4 day backpack over 70km from Patonga – Yarramalong with 4 other teenage Venturers carrying all their own food and supplies

Community Service – She has helped others undertake HSC as a reader/writer for students with special provisions at Orara High School and as a  Youth Helper has helped with running the scout troop
Expression – performed as part of the chorus/dance group in the Orara High School's Musical Rock Apocalypse and even performed a fill in solo
-created a series of three fantasy artworks in conjunction with her art studies
Lifestyle - Has Represented Coffs Harbour in the Netball representative side at State Age Championships
Outdoor activities – has become a proficient ab-seiler
Environment – Helped Coffs Creek Landcare over several weeks with environmental work
Has become a fully qualified First Aider
Citizenship – participated in a Mock United Nations representing Syria, and organised for the Venturers to attend a Coffs Harbour City Council meeting
Sarah has been in Coffs Harbour Scouts since 2005 been through Cubs, scouts and Venturers
Sarah is `Coffs Harbours 26th Queen Scout - and the first Queen Scout in over 10 years.
